Sheng times two

(2021)

One space within the networks of the internet collecting visual representations of culture between two individuals; Sheng Times Two.

I connected with Sheng on Instagram over the past two years as I became more curious about my Chinese culture. I decided to create a project where I could virtually collaborate with him through the established platform where our paths crossed.

Through this project I wish to grasp a greater understanding of myself while conversing with what life is like in Chuzhou, China. Sheng and I take turns posting photos on our shared Instagram account (@shengtimestwo). We were able to create a posting pattern that mimics the social aspects of text messaging a friend. Sheng and I call each row a “conversation”. Every row consists of two images, one from him and one from me. These photos are separated with a post of a white square with three dots (. . .) representing the animated three dots that appear when someone is typing a message to you. We alternate who starts the conversation which grants both of us the power to respond to the image that starts the conversation, as well as to present the other person with something to respond to.

My Chinese name is Qian Sheng Fu, hence the title of these collected cultural conversations; Sheng Times Two
